Students discuss language diversity at EU language forum in İzmir



120 university students from 20 cities across Turkey, academics and experts shedding light on different aspects of language will be gathering together on the occasion of the European Union Language Forum to be held in İzmir. The inauguration ceremony on 14 October will be attended by Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey Mr. Gabriel Munuera Vinals and ESİAD President Mr. Mustafa Güçlü.

Students will be taking part in workshops focusing on issues such as multilingualism as the EU’s distinctive feature, language policies in Turkey in the framework of relations with the EU, language learning in Turkey and the EU, linguistic diversity as a source of harmony and dialogue, and the language of the media, will participate in a training and an interactive panel session.  

At the forum, to be moderated by Mesut Yar, students will discuss the topic of language and assess the results of a poll to be conducted through electronic voting. Speakers of the event include Küçük İskender, poet, Neslihan Kurt, sign language practitioner, Nazlı Çevik Azazi, story-teller beyond borders, and Onur Ertuğrul, the founder of Lügat365, unearthing ancient lexicology and bringing it to light.

The forum is organised by the “EU Information Centres Network” established in 1996 and operational across 20 provinces with the financial support of the EU Delegation. Apart from serving as a regular source of information on the EU, its norms and values as well as Turkey’s accession process, these centres are also organising conferences, meetings, exhibitions, concerts, and other events.
